Moka Pot

Recipe by coffee

  • Midnight Run & Dockside Drop Best for this coffee

    Grams Original 20 g coffee + 140 g water | 1:7.
US cups & spoons Approx. 4 tbsp ground coffee + 0.59 US cup water.

    Steps

    1. Fill the lower chamber with 140 g of water, just below the safety valve; keep the valve uncovered.
    2. Fill the filter basket with the 20 g of grounds and level off without tamping or packing.
    3. Assemble the pot and place over medium heat.
    4. As coffee collects in the upper chamber, remove from heat when flow turns pale or starts sputtering. Pour and serve.
  • MEDIUM-FINE GRIND / BREWER-SIZED

You need Moka pot, water, stove or burner; coffee amount depends on the pot. Fill the coffee basket level; water follows the pot's fill level.

    Steps

    1. Fill the lower chamber to just below the safety valve; keep the valve uncovered. Follow the brewer's instructions.
    2. Fill the filter basket with grounds and level off without tamping or packing.
    3. Assemble the pot and place over medium heat.
    4. As coffee collects in the upper chamber, remove from heat when flow turns pale or starts sputtering. Pour and serve.
How to measure

A better everyday brew. Use grams for consistency. Use cups and spoons for convenience.

Water: 1 US cup = 236.6 mL; 1 US tablespoon = 14.8 mL; 1 g water ≈ 1 mL. Ground coffee: 1 level US tablespoon ≈ 5 g, so 1 US cup of grounds ≈ 80 g. Grind size, roast and packing change the weight. Use level spoons and treat every household measure as a starting point.

A FEW USEFUL DETAILS

Water amounts are inputs; finished drink volume will be lower. For moka pots, follow the brewer's fill level and basket capacity; never tamp the grounds. Cold brew retains the 12-hour steep; strain, then dilute to taste if desired. Espresso volume varies with crema, so weigh its yield rather than measuring it in cups.

Note: Conversions use 5 g per level tablespoon.

Measuring notes

US measures: 1 cup = 236.6 mL; 1 tbsp = 14.79 mL; 1 tsp = 4.93 mL. UK metric: 250 mL cup, 15 mL tbsp, 5 mL tsp. About 5 g ground coffee per level tablespoon; weigh the grams for best consistency. Water amounts are amounts added, not final drink yield. 200°F ≈ 93°C.

Quick water conversions

300 g ≈ 300 mL = 1.27 US cups or 1.20 UK metric cups. 500 g ≈ 500 mL = 2.11 US cups or 2 UK metric cups. 1,000 g ≈ 1 litre = 4.23 US cups or 4 UK metric cups.
